A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages locations domestically and abroad.

"The first tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a notable participant at the annual first sale.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is famous for placing high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "astonished at the amount," adding, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after previously remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to surpass his own record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.

The intense energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly prepared for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," shared one elated patron.
