One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the board at OpenAI, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their advancement".

Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.

The freshly disclosed emails showed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted Summers' determination to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company stated.

This announcement arrives after both chambers of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will then head to the desk of the White House for approval. Trump has said he intends to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the matter following objections from his base.

A collection of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.

The messages showed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to link Summers to notable global figures.

After the emails were shared with the wider community, he stated he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in corresponding with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and fix connections with the individuals closest to me".

Summers held senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He led the university from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in DC where the professor was a prominent member, verified that the economist was not affiliated with the group.
