RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
